    Introduction:

     

    This position is part of a Disaster Recovery team.   We are not first responders, but when natural disasters strike (e.g.., hurricanes, earthquakes, flood waters, tornados, fires, etc.) our team travels to the disaster area as part of the recovery process to help restore the communities. Our primary focus is working with homeowners in the restoration of their houses and property.

     

    This position will begin as an “on-call/as-needed” basis, with strong probability of converting to a regular, full-time position with full employee benefits which include (but are not limited to) medical, prescription, dental, vision, FSA, 401k with employer matching, paid holidays, and paid leave.

     

    We are looking for individuals who are willing, able, and readily available to be a part of this team, who can report for work and travel on short notice to disaster sites and remain engaged in the recovery efforts for varying periods of time. Longer assignments will include rotations for travel back and forth between their home and the disaster sites.

     

    Position Summary:

     

    The Specification/Report Writer (FEMA, CDBG) is responsible for working very closely with our architects, designers and consultants to complete projects and write detailed specifications and reports on the topics required. Must have good knowledge of architectural design, engineering coordination, design trends, products, construction methodology, building systems, material application and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness as well as relevant standards, regulations and codes.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Reviews drawings and other documents to write and edit specifications for projects and coordinates compliance with project requirements, institutional guidelines, industry standards, technical conditions, acceptable standards, and existing laws, rules, regulations and codes.
    • Interprets the project design requirements and translates those requirements into materials, methods, equipment, procedures, installation, and certification testing necessary to provide the narrative descriptions which are used to procure, install and erect building components.
    • Participates in fostering a green workplace through sustainable work practices.
    • Incorporates Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects and functions as an internal sustainability resource.
    • Participates in QA/QC reviews and checks on project documents.
    • Assists project managers and architects with material and system constructability analysis.
    • Performs product research; assists project designers with material selection and system research.
    • Participates in quality management reviews and technical advice in design development through construction document phases.
    • Provide and develop for the testing standards for materials, assemblies and fabrications to comply necessary code and regulations.
    • Assists project architects with shop drawing and product substitution review.
    • Coordinates and reviews consultant technical specifications for conformance with populous standards.
    • Acts as a risk management resource to other project leaders.
    • Develops and maintains relationships with vendors.
    • Maintain library of specifications and develops new specification sections as needed.
    • Participates in developing and improving populous document standards and best practice procedures and bridges the gap between design professionals, specifications, LEED, QA/QC and construction administration.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or equivalent in appropriate education and experience required.
    • Minimum 5 years in architectural or engineering practice with focus in specifications development.
    • Prior experience with specification writing on a federal or state project or program is highly desirable.
    • Advanced Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    Certifications:

    • Construction Specifications Institute certification preferred. (CDT, CCCA, CCPR and/or CCS)
    • LEED Green Associate or ability become one within six months of the hire.

    Competencies:

    • Advanced knowledge of architectural design, engineering coordination, design trends, products, construction methodology, building systems, material application, and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness.
    • Advanced knowledge of construction procedures and schedules.
    • Advanced knowledge of building envelope components, interior plans and material requirements of all building and facility types. Knowledge in landscape, hardscape, civil and site engineering specifications is preferred but not required.
    • Advanced knowledge of building codes and ability to research and apply/incorporate into technical documents.
    • Expert knowledge of master format divisions.
    • Proficiency in specifications software programs such as e-SPECS preferred.
    • Ability to produce a well-coordinated, detail-oriented, fully integrated specifications.
    • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and produce results within deadline.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

    Travel:

     

    IBTS covers travel expenses, i.e., travel, per diem (food and lodging). Where reimbursements are provided, they will be provided directly to the individual and in a timely fashion.
