Responsibilities

Inspects the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial and residential buildings, and other structures for compliance with applicable codes and standards.

 

** PLEASE NOTE - the worksite areas are in Metro DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia **

 

Supervision Received

Normally receives guidance regarding overall mission and unusual priorities, etc. but may set work methods, timetables, etc.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned. Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Inspects the construction, alteration, or repair of commercial and residential buildings, and other structures for compliance with applicable codes and standards
  • Inspects foundations and concrete; building structure, plumbing, heating and electrical system installations; accessibility, fire and life-safety systems
  • Evaluates materials and work relative to applicable building codes, ordinances, regulations, and relative to approved plans; issues notices to identify corrections required for compliance or to stop work
  • Responds to verbal and written inquiries from architects, contractors, builders, City personnel, and the public; interprets, applies, and explains requirements and restrictions related to building codes, ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures; develops alternative methods for compliance with requirements and restrictions
  • May assist with scheduling appointments and reviewing plans for compliance with building codes, ordinances and regulations

Decision Making

Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks. Applies organizational policies. May interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions. 

 

Leadership Provided

Work with a team of other experienced inspectors, under a Registered Design Professional / Master Code Professional. Participates in regular technical and administrative training and professional development. May have supervisory authority over work group.

 

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. This is not an exhaustive list.

  • Thorough knowledge of International Code Council Building codes; related federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; building tools and materials; methods of building construction; safety methods; and principles, practices, and techniques of building inspection
  • Read, interpret, apply, and explain building plans, blueprints, specifications, and building codes; make mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately; use word processing and other related computer software programs; prepare and maintain complete, accurate, and concise reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing; exercise initiative making recommendations to management; communicate effectively with individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently and organize and prioritize

 Proficiency in safely operating office equipment including computers

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of experience in building trades, or an equivalent combination of closely related education, training, and work experience

 

 Preferred Education & Experience

  • International Code Council (ICC) Certified Master Code Professional and five (5) years of building construction and/or construction inspection experience

 Must have a minimum of two of the four following ICC certifications:

  • Residential Building Inspector
  • Residential Electrical Inspector
  • Residential Mechanical Inspector
  • Residential Plumbing Inspector

Equivalent state or other certifications will be considered
